5 Signs That Your Vehicle’s AC Compressor Is Failing

No matter where you live, if it’s hot outside, you do not want to drive a car without air conditioning. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with your AC unit, but the compressor is usually the problem.

The compressor is one of the most important parts of the AC unit. It begins the refrigerant cooling process by pressurizing the coolant and moving it to the condenser, where it continues to cool down the fluid until cold air blows from the vents. A bad compressor will not be able to start the process.

Here are five signs that the compressor is not operating properly:

AC No Longer Blows Cold

The first (and obvious) indication of a problem with the AC system in your vehicle is that the air no longer blows cold in the cabin. The normal temperature is an outlet temperature of 27-38 degrees Fahrenheit for an outside temperature of 70 degrees. When the compressor starts to fail, the temperature will rise at the AC outlet.

Unusual Noise

Anything that makes unusual noises can be a problem on any car, but a noisy, failing compressor will tick, rattle or squeal. It is made up of moving mechanical parts and bearings, and when they stop working, the compressor will begin to make odd sounds.

All of these sounds are different than the start-and-stop noises the compressor makes during normal working conditions.

Circuit Breaker

If the compressor is bad, it can trip the circuit breaker on your vehicle. This is by design to prevent overheating and a fire. Instead of resetting the circuit breaker, find out why the breaker tripped. An experienced auto technician can help you diagnose the part that is causing the problem.

Fluid Leaks

If the bearing is worn out on your compressor, it will no longer be able to keep the fluids inside the part. Leaking refrigerant is a health hazard, so if you see the compressor leaking, stop using the AC and seek professional help.

Clutch Does Not Work

The clutch on the AC compressor is attached to the engine, and it’s engaged as needed by the AC system. If the clutch is stuck, the AC cannot operate.

Any AC problem can make driving miserable in hot weather, so at the first sign of a failure, take the vehicle to a mechanic trained in AC repair.
