It is important to replace a defective radiator immediately. Your engine could overheat every time you drive your car. Overheating can cause damage to engine parts like the head gasket, the cylinder block, and the exhaust manifold. If your vehicle is older than 10 years and still has the original radiator, it could be a sign that it is failing. These are other signs that it is.
Coolant Leaks
You will find more rust inside a radiator the older it gets. This rust causes coolant to leach out of the radiator by eating through the bottom. Because the coolant level is too low, your engine will overheat. Even if you keep adding coolant to the cooling system, it will leak out of the rusted radiator and the level will remain low. Unfortunately, the radiator needs to be replaced.
Rusted Radiator
To determine if the radiator has rusted, you don’t need to see a coolant leak. Instead, remove the radiator cap from your engine when it is cold to inspect the coolant. If coolant turns orange or has rust in it, your radiator may be corroded. Two reasons a corroded radiator should be replaced are that it can cause corrosion to the rest of your cooling system, and it will also start to leak.
Clogged Inlets
The radiator reduces the coolant temperature when it heats up from being circulated through the engine. This ensures that coolant stays cold when it circulates through an engine. Inlets allow air to flow through the radiator. Inlets can become blocked by dirt and other debris, rendering them ineffective. A new radiator is required in this situation because the inlets are built into the radiator.
Damaged Inlets
A new radiator is also required if the inlets are damaged. If the radiator is damaged from an accident or other road debris, you might need a replacement radiator. To ensure that the radiator can function properly, it must be in good condition. To keep your engine’s temperature within a normal range, replace any radiator that may be damaged.
