Generally, it is recommended that you have your brake system inspected once a year. In terms of mileage, this equates to every 12,000 miles. Your brake system is the most important safety system on your automobile, so don’t put these inspections aside. If you are having any of the problems listed below, we want to warn you that these are signs that your brakes are going bad.
ABS/Brake Light
The ABS or Brake light will turn on if there is a problem with the brake system. The Brake light will also turn on when you set the parking brake. These dashboard lights are there to warn you when the brake system is overdue for service or there is a problem.
Strange Noises
Your brakes may tell you themselves that they need to be serviced. If they are squealing or scraping, you need new brake pads. If they are squealing, they may be overheating. If they are grinding, the brake pad surfaces have completely worn off.
Wobbling/Vibration
The latter can also cause your vehicle to wobble or vibrate when you slow down and stop. In addition, warped rotors can also make your automobile vibrate when you apply the brakes. Finally, debris in the calipers can make your vehicle wobble.
Leaking Brake Fluid
If you see brown or red spots on the garage floor, your brake system may be leaking. The brake fluid can leak out of the hoses or the master cylinder. It’s important to have the leak fixed right away to ensure you can slow down and stop your automobile.
Soft Brake Pedal
Another problem that can happen with the brake hoses is air bubbles. These bubbles can make your brake pedal sink all the way to the floor. They can also make the pedal give and take while you press down on it.
Pulling to the Side
There’s no reason why your automobile should change directions when you apply the brakes. If it pulls to the side, you probably have a caliper that is stuck in needs to be replaced. Generally, the calipers should be changed every 60,000 miles.
Overheating
Finally, we mentioned above that your brake system will squeal when the brakes are overheating. You will also smell strong burning odors coming from the brakes. Do not drive your vehicle if the brakes are too hot. You may not be able to stop it.
