Signs My Exhaust System Is Overdue for Service

Generally, the exhaust system should be inspected every one to two years to make sure everything is okay. This gives us an opportunity to inspect things like the muffler, tailpipe, and catalytic converter to ensure they do not need to be replaced. If you notice any of the following problems with your car, truck, or utility vehicle, bring the vehicle to our shop because there is an issue with the exhaust system.

Excess Noise

First of all, your automobile may it extremely noisy if there is a problem with the muffler or if the catalytic converter has been stolen. The muffler lasts on average about two to four years. The catalytic converter lasts much longer. It usually lasts about 10 years unless it is taken from your automobile. If your vehicle is louder than normal, the muffler likely has a hole in it.

Poor Performance

Your engine is going to perform poorly whether the exhaust system is leaking or clogged. The reason why the exhaust is removed from the combustion chamber is so that the chamber can produce fresh combustion with fresh air and fuel. If the exhaust is clogging the chamber, your engine performance will lag.

Poor Fuel Economy

Unfortunately, this will have an effect on your fuel economy. You will notice that your automobile does not get the normal gas mileage out of a full tank. This is because the engine is struggling to run, and, as such, it is burning more fuel while you are driving.

Hissing or Tapping

Another sign that your exhaust system needs to be repaired is tapping or hissing noises when you fire up the engine. This is a sign that the exhaust manifold is leaking. It is also a sign that the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking. Either part needs to be replaced if you have a leak.

Tailpipe Damage

It’s easy for the tailpipe to get damaged by road debris, speed bumps, and curbs. If you hit the tailpipe on a road hazard, it may get dented or end up with a hole in it. It’s a good idea to inspect your tailpipe regularly to make sure it is not damaged.

Exhaust Fumes

Finally, you may be subjected to exhaust fumes in the passenger cabin if the exhaust system is clogged or leaking. We cannot overstate the importance of pulling over and calling for a tow truck. Inhaling exhaust fumes is dangerous and deadly.

Call us today if you are having any of the problems listed above. We would be happy to inspect your exhaust system and repair it.
