Why Did My Clutch Sink to the Floor Without Catching?

Green Lawn Garage is the best auto shop in Denver, and we can replace your clutch when it needs it. If the clutch is sinking to the floor without catching, it needs to be replaced. The internal mechanisms of the clutch have worn out and the clutch is no longer effectively transferring the power from the engine to the transmission. The clutch can also start to feel too soft underneath your foot or make it harder to press down. Alongside these problems, here are other signs of a faulty clutch.

Changes in the Bite Point

The other thing that is going to change is the bite point in the clutch. This is also called the catch point. Your muscles get used to where this point is and you shift gears without even thinking about it. Unfortunately, if your clutch is going out, the catch point is going to get higher. Consequently, you may start to have problems shifting gears, such as grinding them when you shift them. This is a sign that the bite point has changed and is no longer in its original place.

Burning Clutch Smells

We talked briefly above about how the clutch takes the engine’s power and moves it over to the transmission. This power shift is temporary, and the power is moved back to the engine when you release the clutch. Unfortunately, a clutch that needs to be replaced might slip and transfer the power prematurely. You will not only have problems shifting gears, which we will talk more about below, but you will also smell the clutch overheating.

Problems Shifting Gears

You can tell when the power is with the transmission because the gear shift is seamless. There is no grinding and it is easy to move the gear stick. If the clutch has slipped in the power is making its way back to the engine, you may grind the gears if you continue to shift them. In addition, you may also notice that the gear stick feels stiff.

Lagging Acceleration

Another problem that is going to occur is your wheels are not going to turn right away when you release the clutch. Consequently, it will seem as if your acceleration is lagging. All of this can happen if the clutch is no longer able to manage the power transfer between the engine and transmission.

If this is the case, Green Lawn Garage in Denver, PA, can replace your clutch. Give us a call today.
